Chronic kidney disease (CKD) refers to long-term kidney damage or reduced kidney function that lasts for more than 3 months, no matter the cause. In some cases, CKD can progress to kidney failure, also known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD), which may require dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Simply put, dialysis is a treatment that helps clean your blood when your kidneys can no longer do the job. There are two main types of dialysis:

1. Hemodialysis (Blood dialysis): In hemodialysis, a machine draws your blood, cleans it using a dialyzer (an artificial kidney), and then returns the filtered blood to your body.

In hemodialysis, you typically need to visit the dialysis center three times a week. On the other hand, with peritoneal dialysis, you’ll need to perform water exchanges 3 to 4 times a day from the comfort of your home.

Each hemodialysis session lasts around 4 hours and is done three times a week, usually on alternate days.
