What are the benefits of kidney transplantation?

3 Key Benefits of a Kidney Transplant: Live Longer, Live Better, and Save on Costs

  • No more dialysis, as long as the transplant functions well.
  • Blood pressure becomes easier to manage, though some may still need medication.
  • Long-term follow-up care is less time-consuming and more affordable than dialysis.
  • Most fluid and dietary restrictions are lifted.
  • You can often return to work and resume normal activities.
  • Enjoy a better quality of life with the potential for a longer lifespan.
  • Overall, it’s a more cost-effective option compared to ongoing dialysis treatments.
When is a kidney transplant required?
  1. Chronic kidney disease with a function of less than 15%
  2. A person already on dialysis

How painful is kidney transplant?

It’s normal to feel some discomfort during the first week after surgery. Your side might be sore, and you may feel weak or tired as your body heals. Most people can get up and start moving around slowly just one day after surgery.

Who can donate a kidney?

To donate a kidney, you need to be in good physical and mental health and at least 18 years old. Donors go through a series of tests to make sure:

  • They’re healthy and have a low risk for surgery.
  • They have two healthy kidneys, so donating one will still allow the recipient to have a successful outcome.
  • They don’t have any risk factors or conditions that could shorten their lifespan or increase their chances of developing kidney disease later in life.
What is the process of a kidney transplant?

First, you’ll need to consult with your nephrologist. A pre-transplant workup is done for both the donor and recipient. If both are found to be medically fit, you can move forward with the next steps.

A competency assessment is conducted for both the donor and recipient, followed by legal approval from the appropriate authority. Once everything is cleared, the kidney transplant surgery is scheduled.

On the day of the surgery, you may receive additional injections to reduce the risk of rejection and ensure a smooth process.
